Customs through the year
From New Year carol singing to begging for poppy-seed doughnuts: customs still alive in the Ulten Valley.
In this rugged mountain landscape, customs have always been a reason to come together. Some highlights of the year:
- New Year – Carol singers, the village band and shepherds go from house to house wishing everyone good fortune.
- 5 January – On the eve of Epiphany, house and barn are blessed with incense and holy water.
- 2 February – At Candlemas the farmers of the Schweinsteig alpine pasture meet at the neighbouring farm.
- June – On Sacred Heart Sunday, bonfires are lit on the mountain tops in the evening.
- 15 August – On Assumption Day, herbs are blessed.
- 31 October – Masked young men go from farm to farm asking for poppy-seed doughnuts in rhyme.
